WHO AM I AS AN ARTIST?

To search, to question, to doubt…
To see into, to see beyond…
To move beyond appearance and form
This constant intense need to uncover, to discover, to create and capture something inherent
To move beyond reality and get to the essence
What is life without Truth, Meaning, Beauty and Joy?

I recognised I was an artist when I met Raymond Pitre, a kindred spirit, and my first mentor while on summer holiday in Malta. For that moment on it never occurred to me to be anything else. My early work explored crisis of meaning and existential terror in being. At university, my artistic self was crushed and I opted for a career in film, theatre and TV in the UK. Working in Malta on a project reignited my desire to get back to my own art. The landscape, the horizon, the sea mirrored something inherent in me so I moved to Malta, which I have always considered my soul dwelling.
When I am creating I step out of the mundaneity of being. I feel out of time when I gaze in to the eyes of a cat, shoot a flower or witness an interesting marine texture. I feel at one with all that is, immersed in pantheistic wholeness. My aim is to distill the essence of these moments and present these images to the viewer as art.

I dare to champion visual experience and what I consider beauty: something real, raw, primitive and un-tampered with. In a world of simulacra that has stopped believing in beauty, I choose to make it matter. In a climate of cynicism where we are held hostage to terror, war, and coca coma I would like to think that my work encourages viewers to go out and define their own notions of beauty and their own truth in their own unique way.

A brief introduction to my abstract photography

These photographs are an invitation to a calm and meditative voyage through fantastical landscapes. A kind of ethereal colour trip. The images bear witness to the poetics of paint, colour and texture collaborating unintentionally with the elements through time. I sense beauty in these microcosms of colour. I am moved and feel inspired to create these abstractions. I just observe what I see, frame and capture the essence of what exists.
I choose not to impose my interpretation of the image on the viewer. What grounds the images to reality is the title of each piece of work, giving only factual evidence of the name of the boat or street, the location and date.
